Guntha to sq ft: converter and a ready table

Type the gunthas and see the area in sq ft, sq m, acres and hectares. Plus a table for the plot sizes people ask about most.

Almost every plot in and around Ahilyanagar is talked about in gunthas, and almost every builder brochure is in square feet. So the first question on a plot visit is nearly always the same one. How many square feet is this, really?

One guntha is 1,089 sq ft. That's a square of 33 ft by 33 ft, which is the old chain measure the unit comes from. Put the number of gunthas in the box below and the converter does the rest.

Land area converter

  • Gunthas 1
  • Acres 0.025
  • Hectares 0.0101
  • Ares (R) 1.01
  • Sq.ft 1,089
  • Sq.m 101
  • Sq.yards 121

Exact unit conversions (1 guntha = 1,089 sq.ft, 40 gunthas = 1 acre). For a legal measurement, ask the land records office to survey the plot. Open the full calculator

The sizes people ask about most

  • 1 guntha is 1,089 sq ft, or about 101.17 sq m.
  • 2 gunthas is 2,178 sq ft, or about 202.34 sq m.
  • 5 gunthas is 5,445 sq ft, or about 505.86 sq m.
  • 10 gunthas is 10,890 sq ft, or about 1,011.71 sq m.
  • 20 gunthas is 21,780 sq ft, which is half an acre.
  • 40 gunthas is 43,560 sq ft, which is exactly one acre.

Half-guntha and quarter-guntha plots are common in the newer layouts too. Half a guntha is 544.5 sq ft, and a quarter is about 272 sq ft. A 1,000 sq ft plot, then, is a little under one guntha (about 0.92).

Why the numbers don't always match on paper

The 7/12 extract doesn't use gunthas at all. It writes area in hectares, ares and square metres, so a one-acre field shows up as 0.40.47 there. We've explained how to read that in our post on the area on a 7/12. And a layout plan may give the plot in square metres, while the seller quotes it in gunthas. Convert everything to one unit before you compare two plots, or before you work out a price per sq ft.

Also check what's actually being sold. A plot in a layout often loses some area to the road and open space, and the sale deed should state the area you're buying, not the area of the whole survey number.

Measuring a plot yourself

If you'd like to check a plot's size on a visit, two simple tools help. We haven't tested particular brands, so pick by the reviews.

Your own measurement is a check, not a survey. If the numbers differ a lot from the papers, ask for a government survey (the land records office does this for a fee) before you pay.

Questions people ask

How many gunthas make one acre?

Forty. One acre is 40 gunthas, or 43,560 sq ft.

Is a guntha the same everywhere?

In Maharashtra it's 1,089 sq ft. Other states use different local units, so don't carry a number from another state over without checking.

How many gunthas is one hectare?

About 98.84 gunthas. A hectare is 10,000 sq m, a little under 2.5 acres.

Your next step

Pick a plot from our listings and run its size through the converter, then read our guide on what a guntha is if the seller's numbers and the papers don't agree.
