Day one
- Change the main door lock, or at least the cylinder.
- Find the main water valve and the electricity board, and label them.
- Photograph the meter readings for electricity and water.
This week
- Transfer the electricity connection and property tax to your name.
- Register with the society office and get the maintenance details in writing.
- Update your address with the bank and on Aadhaar.
Keep safe, forever
Put the registered sale deed, Index II, receipts for stamp duty and registration, the society share certificate and the possession letter in one folder. Scan them too. Every future buyer and bank will ask for them.
A home is easier to sell later when its papers were easy to find from the start.
